PM Modi Announces High-Level Task Force to Reform India’s Examination System

New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the formation of a high-level task force aimed at making the country’s national examination system more transparent, reliable, and technologically advanced.

In a video message posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday (July 26), Modi said the recommendations and report of the newly formed panel would serve as the foundation for ensuring the integrity, fairness, and credibility of future national examinations.

Government Pledges Tough Action

Emphasizing the government’s commitment to protecting students’ futures, Modi said those responsible for examination malpractice, including question paper leaks and cheating, would face strict legal action.

“Those who have played with the future of our students have already been sent to jail,” the Prime Minister said.

He also announced that the government is moving to establish fast-track courts to expedite the trial of examination-related crimes and is pursuing stronger legislation in Parliament to combat paper leaks and examination fraud.

Members of the High-Level Task Force

The task force brings together leading experts in technology, education, and public administration to recommend comprehensive reforms to India’s examination system.

The members include:

• Nandan Nilekani – Founding Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and Padma Bhushan awardee.
• S. Somanath – Former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
• Tapan Deka – Former Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB).
• V. Kamakoti – Director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.
• Anita Kaul – Former Education Secretary of India.
• Amrit Lal Meena – Logistics and infrastructure expert.

Experts Welcome the Initiative

Education experts believe the combination of Nilekani’s technological expertise and the administrative experience of the other members could play a significant role in modernizing India’s examination system.

They say the proposed reforms are expected to strengthen transparency, reduce question paper leaks and examination fraud, and restore public confidence in the country’s assessment process through greater use of technology and institutional reforms.
