The procession of deaths is growing longer every day as a measles epidemic spreads across the country. In the last 24 hours, a record 17 children have died, bringing the total death toll this year to over 300. Pediatric wards in hospitals are overflowing; three to four children are sharing a single bed, while hundreds of families wail in grief after losing their beloved children.

Children Paying the Price for Extreme Mismanagement

According to health experts, the primary reasons for this humanitarian disaster are the failure of timely vaccination programs and government apathy. The disease has now spread to 58 districts, leaving approximately 20 million children at extreme health risk. The situation is most dire in the densely populated areas of Dhaka, Rajshahi, and Chattogram.

Past Success: The Fall from Grace

The question arises: Was Bangladesh always like this?

Under the previous Awami League government, the National Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) was internationally acclaimed. Due to regular Measles-Rubella vaccinations, door-to-door campaigns, and widespread public awareness, Bangladesh was once able to bring the measles outbreak almost entirely under control.

In recognition of this outstanding contribution, GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, honored Sheikh Hasina with the "Vaccine Hero" award in 2019. This was not just a personal accolade but a global recognition of Bangladesh's immunization system.

Public Outrage: Fingers Point Toward the Government

In light of this horrific situation, the general public and political analysts are directly blaming the former interim government. Allegations have surfaced that the administration led by Dr. Yunus, the head of the interim government, was so preoccupied with "state reforms" that it displayed extreme negligence toward fundamental issues like public health.

Demands from aggrieved parents and conscious citizens include:

  • Vaccine Crisis: Despite an acute shortage of Measles-Rubella vaccines nationwide over the last few months, the government failed to import them.
  • Disrupted Programs: Regular vaccination schedules collapsed amidst the instability of political transition, leaving thousands of children unvaccinated.
  • Lack of Coordination: The Health Ministry's emergency response has been extremely sluggish, making it impossible to control the infection rate.
Expert Opinion

Physicians have stated that most of the deceased children were either unvaccinated or suffering from malnutrition. The failure to distribute Vitamin-A capsules on time is cited as another reason for the rising mortality rate. While the government has promised emergency measures, the real-world impact remains negligible.

The tears of bereaved parents and the mounting public anger make it clear that this "administrative failure" by the interim government is leading the country toward a massive humanitarian catastrophe. Unless stern measures are taken immediately, it will be impossible to stop this procession of death.
